IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
What would it take to protect my family during a natural disaster or a nuclear detonation? How can I prepare my home for a pandemic sickness or a chemical attack? Living and working in the New York metropolitan area at a time when the US government has enflamed global hostilities and proved itself unable to deal effectively with catastrophic events causes me great unease. America seems adrift and groundless in the context of a government that has dissolved the social contract with its citizenry in favor of a do-it-yourself form of conservative ideology.

“Go Kit” examines the consequences of this outlook, showing how a neo-nuclear family of four plans to deal with disaster without relying on outside intervention. Go Kit refers to ready-made survival packages that have the basics to live for a specific period of time, including food, water and first aid. Three scenarios are explored. They are a concentrated examination of family disaster planning suggested by the Department of Homeland Security and the American Red Cross.

The desolate frontier of American myth has been replaced by the urban and suburban metropoli that must be navigated to bring the family to safety. I hope to render visible some of the anxieties of living in a superpower at war, and the attempt of one man to keep his family safe.
