THE DISASTER PLAN OF A FAMILY OF FOUR
-Statement "During an emergency, your local, county or State emergency management officials will notify you via Emergency Alert System broadcasts on the radio, by special statements on radio or television, or even by traveling with bullhorns in certain areas. They may also use community notification systems such as Reverse 911, which sends messages to home telephones. If an emergency is taking place and you are unsure what to do, first Shelter-in-Place. Then listen to the radio for instructions from emšergency management officials. With these messages, your emergency management officials will tell you which Public Actions to take. They may advise you to close the windows and Shelter-in-Place until further notice. Or they may advise people in parts of your community to evacuate. When you receive these messages you should take them seriously and act immediately." - NJ Office of Emergency Management |
GET OUT OF TOWN There may be a situation in which it is best to leave the area. The family would most likely employ their car, a 1992 Volvo 240 wagon. The car is kept with a 1/3 tank of gas or more at all times. There are plans for both short and long range evacuations. Jay has parents in Northern Virginia, just outside of Washington DC. If the nation’s capitol is also compromised, an alternative trip would take the family to relatives in New England.
